Checking endianness

When should the endianness be checked? Every time a file is opened for anything?

Also, I get a warning at compilation with the line checking it:

src/obidmscolumn.c:533:69: warning: comparison of integers of different signs: 'ssize_t' (aka 'long') and 'unsigned long' [-Wsign-compare]
    if (read(version_file_descriptor, &little_endian, sizeof(bool)) < sizeof(bool))
